Designer Maria Gustavsson describes herself as “A stubborn Swede that likes colour.” She founded Swedish Ninja, a Malmo-based design brand that specialises in lighting and furniture, in 2016. Today the brand offers an eclectic collection of products designed by both Maria and other local designers. In this film, Maria discusses Malmo’s burgeoning design scene, fusing a Scandinavian aesthetic with myriad European design styles, and why life is better on a bike.
This film is one in a series of six commissioned by Swedish Design Moves. The project saw Zetteler Films travel to Malmö to document some of the people and practices exhibiting as part of the Swedish Design Pavilion at the 2017 London Design Fair. Filmed in the designers’ everyday surrounds, each film captures the raw human emotions, beliefs and inspiration driving each practice. You can watch the trailer for the series here.
