Too often, transformative change is assumed to be a top down force that filters to the local level. But what if we inverted that process? For over 10 years in Birmingham, CIVIC SQUARE has been prototyping how civic infrastructure – at a neighbourhood scale – will be essential to tackling society’s major social, ecological and economic challenges. It does this by stewarding physical spaces and hosting everyday activities, large scale festivals and learning experiences to organise, connect, eat, play, discern and dream together.
Co-founded by Imandeep Kaur, CIVIC SQUARE collaborates with neighbours, practitioners and an ecosystem of partners to reimagine economic systems, land stewardship, governance models and ecological building design. Examples include its Neighbourhood Public Square system demonstrator, an initiative to democratise access to spaces, tools, skills and resources, and 3ºC Neighbourhood, a piece of research co-authored with Dark Matter Labs that explores the current risks that UK urban neighbourhoods face over this century due to climate and ecological breakdown, outlining the fundamental shifts necessary to approach these futures.
Through neighbourhood co-production, design, research, talks and workshops, CIVIC SQUARE joins conversations about home, street and neighbourhood-scale governance and the built environment with a wider ecosystem of interconnected movements at local, national and global scales.
WHAT WE DO FOR CIVIC SQUARE
We stand firmly alongside CIVIC SQUARE and its belief in neighbourhoods at the forefront of wider societal change, and are excited to take on its strategic communications for such an ambitious moment in its history. As the trusted partner for CIVIC SQUARE and its burgeoning ecosystem, the Zetteler team looks forward to introducing the media, industry allies and wider political decision makers to the people-powered movement rippling from Birmingham across the country and beyond. Stay tuned for major announcements in 2025 and 2026.
