Since 1995, the trio of directors behind the award-winning architects East – Julian Lewis, Judith Lösing and Dann Jessen – have built a reputation for treating space, context and local needs with serious respect. Working across housing, masterplans, community and workspace buildings, high streets and other public spaces, East's impressive portfolio includes: Bream Street Social Housing, a five-storey building at Hackney Wick; the Kodak Energy Centre, a new energy centre building serving 2000 new homes; and nearly 30 high-street projects in London over the last 25 years. Up next is East's biggest project yet, as they turn their careful attention to one of London's – perhaps the world's – most famous thoroughfares: Oxford Street. As part of plans to pedestrianise “the nation's shopping street”, East will lead on the design of the street's most iconic section, including Oxford Circus. Details of the design itself are still in development, but traffic on Oxford Street will come to a halt this September and soon we can look forward to a transformed Oxford Street experience with new, greener spaces for walking, shopping and just hanging out. Beyond their own projects, East's directors contribute to conversations around the built environment through lectures, panels and books. Judith, Julian and Dann are all members of design review panels across London, including the Mayor of London's pilot Town Architects scheme. Equally impressive, in 2025 Judith published London Arboretum with the Architecture Foundation, a beautiful book exploring the role of trees in urban design across London.
