In the space of just a few years, the UK’s sauna culture has transformed, going from a handful of public saunas scattered around the country to almost 150. Kiln Sauna, founded in 2024, is at the forefront of the shift. Created by the designers Kathryn Tyler and Angus Thatcher, Kiln aims to take sauna out of the luxury health-club context it has long been linked to, and fold it into the rhythms of everyday life.
Inspired by the community-sauna traditions of Northern Europe, and led by a sustainable design approach rooted in nature, Kiln brings wood-fired wellbeing and the pleasures of hot-cold immersion to the Cornish coast. It currently operates two mobile saunas – one on Gylly Beach, Falmouth, and another moving between Kiln Quay in Flushing, Mylor in Coastland and the Ferry Boat Inn in Helford Passage. Kiln was named Best Community Sauna at the British Sauna Society awards in 2024.
WHAT WE DO FOR Kiln Sauna
With a Finn for a founder, Zetteler has always been a champion of sauna culture, and we’ve been delighted to see the UK catching up with the Continent in the last couple of years. We’re hugely excited by what Kathryn and Angus are doing with Kiln, and by the plans they’ve got for their new site beside the Tate in St Ives – stay tuned.
